We are pleased to present our series of Spanish workshop discussions on public health topics to equip you with Spanish public health education terminology to serve Latinx communities.
Join our series of public health-focused discussions
led by fluent Spanish speakers in public health for you to improve your Spanish language skills.

Recommended for attendees with
at least a basic knowledge of Spanish.

Introducing our Workshop Leaders:

Ariel E. Reyes, MBA

Ariel Reyes is a nonprofit leader, with a background in Public Health Management. He has a Graduate Certification in Hispanic Studies from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Ariel has worked with the Peace Corps and The Clinton Global Initiative to bring many public health projects to rural communities in Central America.

Adriana Diaz, MPH

Adriana Díaz is a public health professional with a background in program implementation, project management, health equity, health promotion, disease prevention, and research. She earned her Masters of Public Health Degree with a focus on health behavior and health education from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Adriana currently works for a local health jurisdiction and has previous experience working in clinical settings, academia, and the nonprofit sector.

Valeria Vallejo Montoya

Valeria Vallejo Montoya (she/her/hers) is originally from Pomona, CA where I grew up as a first-generation Mexican-American. I am currently a third-year undergraduate at the University of California, San Diego pursuing a bachelor's degree in Public Health with a concentration in Community Health Sciences. I plan to pursue an MPH in the future and get involved with health reform to provide better access to healthcare for vulnerable populations. 

Iván Barragán, MPH

Iván Barragan is a proud Mexican American who was raised in LA, graduated from UC Santa Barbara, and obtained an MPH in HPM from UCLA in 2019. He is a certified Medi-Cal policy nerd dedicated to the health and wellbeing of his fellow Californians. Currently, he is a Staff Analyst at the Substance Abuse Prevention and Control Division within the LA County Department of Public Health. Prior to joining LADPH, he served as the Health and Public Benefits Policy Coordinator with the CA Immigrant Policy Center. He has been immersed in health policy for several years since his time at Venice Family Clinic, where he served as a health insurance navigator, enrolling immigrant, low-income, and homeless patients into health coverage.

Thelma Navarro, MPH

Thelma has experience working in border health for San Diego County Public Health and is now a Health Specialist at UC San Diego Health. Thelma was born and raised in Baja California and ended up in the Inland Empire when arriving in the U.S. at 10 years old. She has a comprehensive research background that started when she was an undergraduate student at UCLA, leading to work in rheumatology, pediatric dentistry and HIV. While working towards her MPH from San Diego State, she worked in local government public health, COVID-19 health communications and humanitarian aid across the US-Mexico border, a passion of hers. Whether through her work or outside of it, she's a strong advocate for health equity, racial justice and population health. She currently works as a Health Specialist with UC San Diego focusing on health literacy and community engagement, while continuing her border aid work. 

Valentina Waschbusch

Valentina Waschbusch is a student  studying Global Health with a concentration in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Miami graduating in Fall of 2023. She was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moved to the United States for her secondary and higher education. She currently works at the G.A.I.L (Geography & Inequalities Laboratory), is a Richter Library Scholar focusing on Health Outcomes in Hispanic Populations and has been selected as a speaker for TEDx MIAMI 2023. 

 As a research grantee with the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training (MHRT) Program at the School of Nursing and Health Studies at UM, she will be spending her summer in Peru participating in Implementation of the Community Health System Innovation (COHESION-I) in low- and middle-income countries under the mentorship of Dr. Amalia Pesantes and Victoria Behar-Zusman

Ana Paula Duarte, MPH, PMP

Ana Paula was born and raised in Brazil, and moved to Mexico where she lived for six years. She moved to the US where she went to undergrad at the University of Iowa. While at Iowa, Ana started working in immigrant health and migrant workers injury prevention. Ana got her Master's degree at the University of Emory School of Public Health. She now works as an Evaluator at the CDC in developmental disabilities. Ana Paula  is passionate about health equity, and has worked on many topics such as HIV prevention, latino health, immigrant health, injury prevention, and many more. 

Kelly Umaña, MPH, CCHW, DrPH candidate. Pronouns: she, her, ella

Kelly Umaña is a public health professional with over eight years of experience leading programs across various public health topics such as maternal and child health, adolescent health, community health workers, Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia, COVID-19, diabetes, and primary health care. Within her work, her priority has been integrating health equity and community-based/grassroots initiatives to create programs tailored to the community. Her keenness in social justice and advocacy led her to become a community health worker to work at the frontlines with the community to increase representation at all levels of public health. Kelly has her own business, Umana Public Health Solutions, supporting organizations to design and implement public health programs. She is also completing a Health Equity Fellowship with HRSA and completing her Doctorate in Public Health at George Washington University.
